How to Get Started with Yoga as a Senior

It can be challenging stepping into a yoga class for the first time, especially as an older adult. It is different from a traditional group exercise class, the postures are unfamiliar, and it may seem like everyone else knows what they are doing. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Below are a few ways to confidently get started on your yoga journey!

Find a beginner level class

There are different types of yoga classes and knowing what you are looking for will prevent you from accidentally stepping into a class where it seems like everyone is twisting themselves into a pretzel.

  • Chair yoga

    • This is a wonderful option if you’re working on your balance or have difficulty making it to the floor. You’ll still be able to challenge yourself and it’s a great way to feel supported and build your confidence.

  • Gentle yoga

    • Gentle yoga classes can vary on challenge depending on the teacher and location, however, you should find that it is a slower pace, involves stretching, and some standing postures as well.

    • You may also find similar classes under the name of Hatha yoga

Watch some Youtube videos before class

This is a great way to become acquainted with the names of poses and what they look like. You can pause, replay, and feel more knowledgeable before stepping into a class.

Let the teacher know that you are new to yoga

Arrive early to class and speak with the teacher. Let them know of any injuries or concerns. Oftentimes, the teacher can guide you to a spot in the room, provide feedback throughout class, and can break down poses.

Do what you can and leave the rest

Practice patience and remember that progress doesn’t occur overnight.

Yoga can be done at any age (I have clients in their 80’s!), however, if done improperly or without adequate support, can lead to injury or discomfort. It is always okay to skip an exercise or ask for assistance! I often recommend coming into child’s pose (a resting pose taught in many yoga classes) or staying seated and focusing on the breath (intentional breathing IS yoga).

Take a private yoga lesson

If you’re still feeling unsure then private yoga instruction is an incredible way to move at your pace, receive feedback on alignment, and build up enough confidence and strength to step into a group class!

Lastly, always consult with your doctor prior to starting if you have any health or mobility concerns!
